Webinar Green Hydrogen – Trends and Developments

The Technical University of Hamburg (TUHH), through the Institute for Environmental Technology and Energy Economics, had launched the webinar series „Green Hydrogen – Trends and Developments“ for the last months.

The final event „Hydrogen activities in the MENA region“ took place last week under the lead of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Martin Kaltschmitt and wrapped up the previous sessions dealing with production, transport, storage and application of green hydrogen. The session was attended by participants from different countries around the world. Dr. Amr Elbanhawy from Ain Shams University in Cairo started with his overview of hydrogen activities in Egypt. Mr. Khalid Salmi from the Regional Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (RCREEE) spoke about these issues in the Gulf States, specifically in the UAE and South Arabia. Ms. Tanja Faller from GIZ presented the activities in Tunisia. The presentations were closed by Mr. Rabii El Bacha from ngage consulting, who focused on Morocco.

What do we need to have/do to achieve the hydrogen transition?

Apart from the improvement of legal framework conditions and market behavior, which are strongly political decisions, all participants agreed that solid agreements, the development of new technologies and infrastructures and robust partnerships are the key points to achieve a sustainable hydrogen transition in the MENA region.

In any case, and beyond the specific differences of each country, what all agreed on, MENA region and European countries, is to reach the goal of achieving an economically, ecologically and socially sustainable transition in the future energy supply.
